[Poem] – One Flesh

I wrote this poem after observing how hard marriage was for most people. Fortunately, my own marriage has not been quite the struggle that is described here. But I think the basic principles still apply.

One Flesh

One flesh;
Two skins -
Stitched together.
Tearing painfully apart
As we chase our desires.
Growing seamlessly closer
As we sacrifice selfishness.

Threatening thorns surround us,
Snaring, snarling,
Scaring, scarring.
Our pride guides us to them,
Our love guides us through them.

We have no choice
But to care for one another;
To hope, to help,
to hold, to heal.
To stand for you,
Or us,
Before we stand for ourselves.
