Honestly, the best piece of advice I can offer is to study comics that have a strong sense of design (either those written by an innovative writer like Kurt Busiek, Alan Moore or Neil Gaiman or those by a fantastic artist you admire) and try to study what they're doing. Will Eisner was a master of using panels for all sorts of interesting effects, so you should definitely study him and read his book, Comics and Sequential Art.

Another indispensable resource would be Scott McCloud's books Understanding Comics and Making Comics, both of which are heavy on theory and written in graphic novel form.

Thank you for this. Do you have any hints towards using the panels on your comic pages for pacing? I've done a few professional pieces now, but really feel that this is where I could really make or break myself. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, this was really helpful. I'm just doing a web comic on my own free time and I was stuck on how to fix the pacing in my comic. I want it to have some sort of build in the first chapters but not feel too rushed at the same time. This kind of gave me some ideas on how to fix the pacing. Thanks for your words of wisdom!
